AIRE Ancient Baths Chicago ®

Please take a moment to look at the photos of the food I have posted. While researching self care spas for myself and my husband, I came across a handful of bathhouses in the Chicagoland area that looked like something straight out of Game of Thrones. While bathhouses typically conjure up thoughts of sexy, kinky stuff, this list does not include “those” type of places. The following are all legit options for rest and relaxation.

Aire Ancient Baths

Tucked away in an unassuming old factory from the late 19th century in River West, Aire Ancient Baths is something straight out of another time. Lit almost entirely by candles, this space still maintains its original bricks, columns, beams and also incorporates historical elements such as 16th century stone fountains and marble from Spain. This is the largest (20,000 square feet!) and second U.S. location, featuring pools of hot, warm, cold and ice water, an indoor/outdoor pool, salt pools and two steam rooms. Five different saunas and Himalayan salt caves, a luxurious Jacuzzi, a saltwater pool, and a full-service cafe are just some of the amenities available in our deluxe 16,000 square foot facility.

Seating for upto 20 people, equipped flatscreens, and free wifi is avaialbe in order to assist in providing a productive meeting. Give us a call today to reserve your private conference room.

Bathhouses in Chicagoland to Relax and Restore

Situated in the northern suburbs of Chicago, this 24-hour, 34,000-square-foot Korean spa is situated between a Korean market, Super H Mart and Home Depot. King Spa has nine different saunas (salt, charcoal, etc), hot tubs, steam room, cold pools, massage rooms, a movie theater, a nap room and even a restaurant. Open under various names and ownership since 1906, Chicago’s oldest bathhouse is a true throwback complete with saunas, steam rooms and a full-service Russian restaurant. The most popular feature at Chicago Bath House is the traditional Banya, Schvitz, or hot room. Each of these rooms have a brick or granite ovens in which boulders, approximately the size of watermelons, are heated to extreme temperatures by gas jets.

When this happens, the water instantly evaporates, creating steam inside the oven and heating the brick enclosure, thereby raising the air temperature in the room. This method provides a much dryer heat than common steam rooms, but not as dry as traditional Finnish saunas. The bathers sit or lay on three-level tiered cedar benches, which allow for dramatically different temperatures at the various heights. Cold water is provided by taps located under the benches. When overwhelmed by the heat, a bather may dump a bucket of frigid water over his head while still in the hot room, or may step outside to use the cold pool.

Our building is a historic 120-year old Victorian brownstone built in 1897 that has been renovated. Chef Giuseppe Tentori wanted to redefine what a steakhouse should be when it opened GT Prime in River North. The pandemic altered plans, but there’s still a great selection of Aussie wagyu, plus a dash of A5 wagyu from Japan. There’s a package called the Carnivore that offers the best GT Prime for $300. We host nightly live piano entertainment, call for current schedule.

We recommend the Culotte, a cut taken from the top cap of the sirloin and comparatively tender and flavorful. If you’re feeling like a different preparation for your beef, the ribeye sandwich or beef-eater dip are less formal options that won’t disappoint. While we prefer chowing down on USDA Prime, dry-aged, gourmet steak at home courtesy of Chicago Steak Company’s convenient door-to-door service, sometimes a night out on the town is in order. When we’re on the west coast, nothing beats one of LA’s numerous steakhouse restaurants, all with a distinctively big screen flare, worthy of star-studded acclaim. Try out a restaurant from our list and eliminate any misconceptions you may have of LA’s dining scene being even remotely red meat allergic.

The commitment to beefy excellence continues to show through with both wet and dry-aged menu options, with a dry-aging room on premises. If the budget has room, try out the melt in your mouth tender certified A-5 Wagyu. One of the most unique menu items, the Baseball Steak is an extra thick top sirloin cut that’s guaranteed to be a homerun every time. The rib-eye, prime rib and filet mignon aren’t any slouches, either. For a side, give the mushroom risotto a try for a creamy, earthy compliment to your perfectly cooked steak’s fiery char.

The design of the Parkway Grill is a study in casual sophistication, striking a perfect balance between elegance and rustic approachability. The brick walls are adorned with elegant paintings by Millard Sheets and mixologists prepare hand-crafted cocktails at the expansive bar, an original from 1920's Chicago. Parkway's award-winning wine cellar, comprised of upwards of three thousand bottles, includes a broad selection of wines served by the glass. Located inside a building that was once a Chicago Fire Department firehouse, this South Loop establishment is steeped in history. In 2017, ownership rebuilt and restored the space after a devastating fire forced it to close.

Pattern in Art: Types and Examples

pattern principle of design

Klimt was the Austrian symbolist artist who pioneered the use of gold in painting. Many of his works featured detailed patterns, often with repeating circles or squares woven together to create an overall pattern effect. ‘The Kiss’ is a great example of this, where elements such as flowers and leaves are used throughout, and the overall effect is one of balance. Klimt often mixes flowing lines with geometric elements, which adorn dresses and textiles. Flowing rhythm – A flowing rhythm shows the repeated elements following bends, curves, and undulations.

Principles of Design: Unity

They can also be used to create rhythm and movement, emphasize certain art elements, and draw the viewer to the work. An iconic example of Warhol’s form patterns is found in his Campbell’s Soup Cans paintings created in the 1960s. The repetition of the oval cans produces regular patterns that have only slight variations that are not noticeable at first glance.

Patterns in Shape and Form

Negative space in a design, also called white space, is space that has no design elements (other than possibly a background color or subtle pattern or texture). Use proportion to create visual interest by drawing the viewer’s eye to particular visual elements within your designs. The elements and principles of art and design are the foundation for creating a composition. The use of these principles can give structure and help you understand how other design pieces and artworks are built. It can help you determine whether a composition will be successful or determine the missing piece of the puzzle.

Natural Patterns in Art

pattern principle of design

A designer does this by choosing the placement of the design elements, their size, boldness, color, and other features. For example, if you’re designing any kind of logo, you can create contrast with a pink background, blue or green elements, and white text. Your ship should be balanced to move forward with ease, and the same goes for the visual elements of your design.

With Renderforest Graphic Maker you can browse through the professional templates created by our team of designers, choose the ones you need, and start editing them. You can have the word “up to” smaller just above the most important element of your poster, to keep the visual hierarchy. This is the second function of emphasis – reducing the impact of the information, you don’t want to catch the eye of your audience first.

What is Pattern Principle in Art? 4 Types, Examples, Definition

These patterns are found in multiple forms of creation, including painting, sculpture, architecture, textiles, and decorative arts. William Morris was a British textile designer and a prominent contributor to the resurgence of traditional British textile arts. His intricate botanical and natural designs show how organic shapes can be utilized to create a fascinating and mesmerizing pattern arrangement. Be sure to leave some space around elements on your pages, especially the most important ones. This white space makes them stand out more and facilitates a better user experience.

Unity

Alignment refers to how text or graphic elements are lined up on a page. This can refer to their alignment in relation to the entire composition (left, center, or right-aligned) as well as their alignment to one another. Whichever type of balance technique you use, the result should feel right. It should give the viewer a sense of harmony and not make them feel uneasy.

It can also be achieved when the vertical axis that divides two elements isn’t placed directly in the center of the page. In that case, the narrower element should have a “heavier” visual weight than the wider one to achieve a balanced look. Balance within a composition can be achieved in a couple of different ways. It’s achieved when elements on either side of a central vertical axis are basically the same. For example, two text blocks on either side of the page would create symmetrical balance, even if the content of those blocks wasn’t identical.

pattern principle of design

Rhythm

Say, you’re working with text, and have chosen more than two or three typefaces and fonts, the entire composition will look all over the place. Your target audience won’t be able to concentrate on the information, and the whole design will turn out to be confusing. When you look at a design composition from now on, think of these principles and how they are being applied.

We’ll also look at the types of pattern available to artists and the importance of this principle. Andy Warhol would famously paint patterns of images and contrasting colors to create his pop art prints. The concepts of 'pattern' and 'rapport' can be easily confused when attempting pattern design on Adobe Photoshop. It is essential to know what they are and how they interact to successfully create patterns in all areas of design where patterns are used. First, it allows you to make elements stand out from one another.

Vincent van Gogh also used texture to emphasise the pattern, by using curving lines along the branches to symbolise light and shadow. Movement refers to the way a user’s eyes move across your composition. Dynamic designs encourage lots of eye movement, while static ones encourage less. The best designers can, to an extent, control which elements users focus on by placing them along the path of the most natural eye movement patterns. Rhythm in art is usually not as obvious as the design principles of repetition and pattern.

Geometric patterns in art refer to shapes, objects, images, or other art elements that repeat themselves in regular or irregular ways. These patterns are based on math principles and are typically characterized by their use of clean lines, bold colors, and shapes. Contrast in art is about creating a focal point to certain elements that can draw the viewer’s eyes.

However, you don’t have to show variety, just because you need to have it in your design. It should come naturally and make up an aesthetically-pleasing composition. To have a perfect emphasis on your design you need to have a clear understanding of what’s important in your composition. Otherwise, your design will be unbalanced and messy, and as a result, it won’t be able to fulfill its purpose. Also, you can use patterns for backgrounds to add texture and consistency, and you can deploy them to deliver consistency between pages of the same type. With the Campbell’s Soup Cans, Warhol’s goal was to copy the repetition and uniformity of advertising by meticulously recreating the same images on each separate canvas.

The pattern has distinguishable recurring elements and motifs, however, these motifs may lack symmetry or systematic arrangement. Symmetric pattern is often used for decorative purposes and generally creates a sense of order or balance in a composition. These patterns have been used in art for thousands of years, with evidence seen in designs in Ancient Greek pottery. It’s also worth noting that a rhythm may appear random if you examine a small section of the rhythm. However, if you step back and examine a larger section, it may be that there is a regular but complex rhythm applied to the design.

By understanding how to use pattern effectively, artists can take their work to the next level and create truly unique pieces. Works from van Gogh display pattern, however pattern appears much more organic and irregular compared to artists such as William Morris. The branches appear like fractals in this painting of almond blossom and the repeating flowers create a pattern design.

Color is important in patterns because the chosen color scheme can convey ideas, elicit a specific emotional response, or it can be used simply for aesthetic purposes. Artists create natural or organic patterns to mimic or attempt to replicate what they see in nature. Juan Díaz-Faes (@diazfaes), is an illustrator specializing in pattern design.

The Town House Los Angeles Wikipedia

town house

As the name suggests, townhouses are designed for high-density, urban environments, with a tall and narrow silhouette. The Town House was developed by oil magnate Edward Doheny[3] as one of the most luxurious apartment-hotels in Southern California. They can be a great option for homebuyers who enjoy living close to their neighbors, or who crave a compromise between a detached house and an apartment. This venerable form of housing — dating back to 17th-century Europe — originated in cities, but now can be found in suburbs and exurbs. As the Manager of Content Marketing at Redfin, Jeff leads a passionate team of writers and content strategists who are dedicated to providing engaging content that matters. In this article, we will explore the pros and cons of purchasing a townhouse compared to other types of housing.

Is a Townhouse the Right Fit for You? Pros, Cons, and What to Consider Before Buying

A townhouse is a type of house dwelling that is characterized by its narrow and tall structure. It’s a house that is attached to one or more similar houses, forming a row or terrace of houses. Townhouses can be found in urban or suburban areas and are often located in neighborhoods that are close to commercial and entertainment districts. The Town House is a large former hotel property built in 1929 on Wilshire Boulevard, adjacent to Lafayette Park in the Westlake district of Los Angeles, California. Technically, townhouse refers to a style of residence, whose chief characteristic is its physical attachment to its neighbors (as opposed to a totally detached dwelling). They originated in London and Paris in the 1600s, and emigrated to the burgeoning colonial cities of North America — Boston, Philadelphia and New York — in the next century.

Read the HOA rules

We do not include the universe of companies or financial offers that may be available to you. Many townhouses are also part of a homeowners’ association (HOA), which means that residents pay a fee to the association to cover the cost of maintenance, landscaping, and other shared amenities. This fee may also cover the cost of trash removal, snow removal, and other services. Additionally, townhouses are often located in desirable locations that are close to shopping, dining, and entertainment. Townhouses are usually multi-level, with two or three stories, and they often have a small yard or patio. They are typically designed with a living room, dining room, and kitchen on the ground floor, with bedrooms and bathrooms on the upper floors.

In the latter case, the individual floors are broken into individual apartments and rented out. Many historic townhouses that were built to house one family have been divided up this way. For example, if you choose to live in Sacramento, for instance, purchasing a townhouse may be a great option since they are relatively affordable and provide a low-maintenance lifestyle. In Boston, townhouses offer proximity to the city’s many attractions and a sense of community, while in Portland, townhouses are often designed with eco-friendly features and provide easy access to outdoor recreation.

Today, townhouses exist in small cities, on the outskirts of cities, and even in suburban areas. In the latter, they are often attached uniform residences belonging to a distinct community that has its own homeowners association. Technically, a townhouse could be any city dwelling, but the name usually applies to a style of multi-floor home that shares one or two walls with adjacent properties. Each has its own entrance and often a small front lawn and backyard as well.

We’ll take a closer look at what to consider before making your decision, and provide some helpful tips for those contemplating purchasing a townhouse. Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or looking to downsize, this guide will provide valuable insights to help you make an informed decision. It’s always a good idea to talk to potential neighbors when you’re considering buying a home. It’s particularly important when buying a townhouse, since you’ll likely be in closer proximity to them. Ask them what they like about the area and if there are any HOA issues you should know about.

Townhouses are a popular housing option for many who want the privacy and independence of a single-family home, but also want the benefits of living in a community. They are often less expensive than single-family homes and offer a lower maintenance lifestyle than owning a standalone house. Additionally, townhouses are typically designed to maximize space, which makes them an excellent choice for those who want a larger living area than an apartment but do not want the upkeep of a single-family home. Use filters to narrow your search by price, square feet, beds, and baths to find homes that fit your criteria. Our top-rated real estate agents in Hollywood are local experts and are ready to answer your questions about properties, neighborhoods, schools, and the newest listings for sale in Hollywood.

This map is refreshed with the newest listings in Hollywood every 15 minutes. Townhouses represent a nice cross between a fully detached home and an apartment. Many in big cities are often situated in historic neighborhoods, so they can be a savvy way to get into a desirable or colorful zip code, especially if you can’t afford a single-family home or brand-new apartment. Many types of homeowners can benefit from townhouses, but they’re a particularly good option for first-time homebuyers, singles or childless couples.

Around the turn of the 20th century, in New York City, they evolved into a more utilitarian form — the rowhouse, built in sets of four, six or eight, identical except for occasional details. And while their popularity has ebbed and flowed over the decades, there are signs that townhouses are getting a new lease on life. In 2020, townhouses comprised 11 percent of single-family new construction, down from nearly 14 percent in 2008, according to an analysis from the National Association of Home Builders. Then, in 2021, the number of new-build townhouses increased by over 28 percent over the previous year.

Some townhouses have a basement or garage, which provides additional living space or storage. Deciding where to live is one of the most significant decisions we make in our lifetime, and choosing the right type of housing is an essential part of this process. With so many options available, such as apartments, detached homes, and townhouses, it can be challenging to decide which type of housing is the right fit for you. While a townhouse may make sense for you now, multi-floor living may not work for everyone and at all stages of life. If you’re planning to expand your family or are worried about your ability to traverse steps in the future, you should have a plan for whether you’ll be able to stay in the property. There are currently 6 townhouses for sale in Hollywood at a median listing price of $988K.

They’re typically less expensive than single-family homes and offer a lower maintenance lifestyle than owning a standalone house. Townhouses are often located in desirable locations and are a popular housing option for many people. If this sounds like what you’re looking for, then a townhouse may be right for you.

Shared walls mean it might be possible to hear what’s happening in your neighbor’s house, and vice versa. When you’re checking out townhouses, listen carefully to see how much sound travels from next door. If you’re able to purchase an end unit, you’ll only have to worry about half the noise, but these desirable homes typically have more windows and can cost more as a result. But this compensation does not influence the information we publish, or the reviews that you see on this site.

When you’re checking out townhouses, listen carefully to see how much sound travels from next door. If you’re able to purchase an end unit, you’ll only have to worry about half the noise, but these desirable homes typically have more windows and can cost more as a result.

Many Millennial homeowners on a budget are choosing newly built townhouse communities within city limits, so they don’t have to sacrifice location when they buy a new home. Homeowners associations can restrict everything from the color of your door to whether you’re allowed to park in your own driveway (as opposed to your garage). Make sure you’re comfortable with the HOA rules — and the financial commitment — before you go ahead with a purchase in any community. Apartments refer to individual living units within a larger building or complex.

20 best movies like Life as a House 2001

life like a house

You have to approach “Life as a House” knowing that it has no interest in life as it is really lived or people as they really are, and offers lovable characters whose personality traits dictate their behavior, just like on television. What is remarkable is how Kline and Thomas, in particular, are able to deepen their characters by sheer skill and depth of technique, so that we like them and care what happens to them. (Whether it is George and Robin we like, or Kline and Thomas, is beside the point--the characters and actors amount to the same thing.) Some episodes in the movie seem especially contrived. One involves a character who discovers something astonishing and falls off the roof. In my experience, people on roofs tend to hold on while digesting astonishing discoveries.

How to Make Your Fish Tank Look Professionally Designed: 13 Steps

Just make sure that whatever you put in the water is safe and won’t pollute the aquarium. Want to add little houses, ships, bridges, and other ornamental structures but don’t have the budget for adding expensive commercial ornaments? You can find certain crafting/modeling materials at the craft/hobby store that can be molded to create your own unique structures. Always consider the types of animals in your tank and the kinds of materials that might be dangerous for them. Additionally, you can also paint the exterior of the tank with a scene of your choice. If you intend to paint the interior of the tank, make sure you only use paints that are safe for your fish.

This gives both the fish and the bird a unique living arrangement. Aquariums aren’t always for fish and reefs, they can also be inhabited by jellyfish. So, instead of taking your frustrations out on your boss or coworkers, why not sit back in your chair for a few minutes and watch some fish swim past your desk. That’s right, this aquarium design can be built on multiple desks and used as dividers. Employees will be much happier and they are much nicer to look at than plain white walls. It’s basically a clear sink with your normal gravel and fish inside of it.

But, if you are hoping to build a low-tech, low maintenance aquascape, then selecting slower growing plants is a better choice. If you use a decent light and CO2 in your tank, a wider variety of plants become easier to grow. Many of these habitats are tropical, and so creating an accurate biotope aquascape requires research. Knowing whether the plants you purchased were grown emersed (out of water) or whether they were cultivated submersed (underwater) is also important. To the untrained eye, all aquascapes might seem to be a collection of randomly arranged sticks, plants, and stones. Even if you live in a small place, you can still enjoy the relaxing sight of a few small fish or a beautiful betta by choosing a small fish tank.

Personally, I’d also add some sparkling or glitter-based elements to this one as well, to increase the girly factor. Experience the majesty of cascading waterfalls within the confines of your living space. This multi-level fish tank design features water flowing gracefully from the topmost layer, creating a series of mini waterfalls as it descends. Each tier presents a unique aquatic habitat, from colorful coral reefs to lush freshwater plantations. It’s a dynamic design that’s sure to captivate with its constant motion and varied environments.

Driftwood is often positioned to look like trees, and aquatic mosses, like Java Moss, are glued or tied to the hardscape to give the entire scene a distinctly overgrown look. Unlike biotope aquascaping (described below), which seeks to mimic a habitat, nature aquariums merely seek to invoke the beauty and aesthetic of a landscape, or environment. When choosing aquatic plants for a Dutch aquascape, Laurens recommends sticking with a selection of plants that complement each other. Detailed knowledge about aquatic plants is also needed for Dutch aquascaping.

Look closely at the video; you’ll see transparent fishing lines attached to both the stones and the bottom of the aquarium. Dragon rock has a similar appearance without the pH altering affect. Rocks can be stacked to build structures and scenes, as well as being used to attach mosses and other plants to. Like driftwood, you can do just about anything with rocks in your aquarium. There are multiple types of wood that are aquarium safe, with manzanita, cholla wood, and mopani being some of the most popular. You can purchase bonsai driftwood or roots, like spider wood, that can be used to create trees with the addition of plants.

The advantage of these plants is they can be grown first and then planted underwater when they reach maturity. Stretching the idea further, you can also strategically place plastic action to complement your theme. If you have a superhero theme for your little boy, Aquaman or Submariner are great characters to include in your underwater world. Consider the use of lawn ornaments and how they might look under the water.

The choice largely depends on the level of maintenance you’re ready to take on. Real bonsai trees offer natural authenticity, though they require diligent care. On the other hand, faux options are effortless and still give that Zen aesthetic. Remember, less can often be more when it comes to pathway designs. The pathway should not overpower the overall balance of the aquascape but rather complement it harmoniously. It’s all about finding the right equilibrium between all of the design elements.

This simple DIY aquarium tunnel plan will have your tank filled with tunnels in no time. You can cut PVC pipes to fit your space, but pre-cut pieces like Y-connectors are best because they don’t contain sharp edges. If you decide to cut your own PVC, make sure to sand any edges until smooth. Remember to carefully choose fish and other aquatic creatures that enjoy environments similar to mossy caves. This harmonious environment setup will not only create an appealing aesthetic but also promote a healthy ecosystem. Java Moss is a cost-effective and popular choice for this style with its soft, lush aesthetic and easy maintenance.

This raised bed of rocks and wood surrounded by sand-like substrate gives the aquascape a tropical feel, despite being a freshwater aquarium. Aquascaping is the process of arranging aquatic plants and hardscape (wood and rocks) in an aesthetically pleasing way, often replicating a scene in nature. Also, unlike some tiny tank ideas, the coffee table aquarium has filtration, heating, and lighting, creating the perfect, healthy environment for the fish. The tank comes complete with LED multi-color lighting and a power filter to keep the water safe for your fish. The one-piece plastic tank provides crystal clear viewing, and the lightweight tank is ideal for a kid’s bedside cabinet, workplace desk, or kitchen counter.

Sailing the Coast of Maine on a Historic Windjammer.

The Grenadines is considered to be one of the most exclusive sailing areas in the world. Our tall ship sailing cruises include an amazing selection of the most desired ports of call, including locations unreachable by the masses on larger ships. Welcome to the Maine Windjammer Association – the largest fleet of traditional tall ships in the Americas.

Guests Help Sail The Schooners

Our iconic windjammers offer multi-day, all-inclusive, sailing adventure cruises in one of the most acclaimed cruising grounds in the world. Offered exclusively in the Pre-Season, these trips have it all. They are the best value with long days to sail and explore, a shore-side lobster bake, and lots of time to relax and unwind. And for fans of real sailing (and not just motoring), Vela also fits the bill. In June, crew and passengers are anxious to get started on a new season, and the windjammers are often the only vessels on the bay. We will offer three and six-night trips, boarding either on Sundays or Wednesdays.

BOARDING TIME

It was originally constructed in 1927 as a New Jersey oyster schooner, converted for passenger sailing in 1977, and then designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1991. Like with most cruises, you pay an initial deposit to secure your spot and then pay the remaining balance 6-8 weeks before setting sail. Many schooners offer an “early bird” promotion that discounts the ticket price (usually by 5%) if you book early, usually by February 1 or March 1. The first “day” begins in the late afternoon and typically involves dropping off your belongings, attending a brief on-deck introductory meeting, and spending the night in the harbor. The most common Maine schooner tours last 3, 4, or 6 days.

Then we sailed to Hell’s Half Acre Island and anchored. Captain Justin used the yawl boat to transport us to the campground for a generous spread of lobster, corn, potatoes, paella, and a traditional dessert of s’mores roasted over the fire. For the entire voyage, we were treated to family-style, made-from-scratch meals crafted by Chef Mark Godfrey and Sous Chef Kat Highley. Everything is prepared on the Crawford Cottage wood-burning cookstove in a tiny kitchen.

The final “day” normally begins with eating breakfast at sea, continues with exchanging contact information among your new friends, and ends with docking the windjammer in the harbor by lunchtime. Most surviving windjammers are schooners, which are defined by the presence of multiple masts, the aft-most (furthest rear) of which is the tallest. It was two summers ago, and we spent about a week on a traditional windjammer, letting the wind dictate our search for lobsters and lighthouses. I think one of the most special things about a schooner cruise is the people you meet. There were passengers from all over the US, and it was a joy to chat with each of them. Wildlife can appear at any time, and it’s usually when you least expect it.

During the day, we sailed routes through Penobscot Bay and its litany of lighthouses, expensive homes, and gorgeous pine. Most cabins feature bunked or overlapping beds, a small sink, a few towel hooks, and some helpful (if minimal) shelf space. And when I say the cabins are more alike than different, what I mean is they are all extremely small. When we sailed, it was owned by Captains (and husband-and-wife duo extraordinaire) Jon Finger and Anne Mahle but as of 2020, they’ve sold the J&E Riggin to new ownership. You don’t pick your cabin (at least not on the schooner we were on). As we swayed in the falling darkness, the light of the lanterns gently illuminating our faces, we listened to the clear sounds of their voices bringing us traditional seafaring tunes.

Small as you’d expect on sailing ships, but charming, wood-paneled and the perfect cozy nests to catch up your beauty rest; otherwise, life is lived up on deck or on shore. There are a handful of shore excursions offered on most itineraries, but many passengers are content to find a good beach or wander around on their own. Sometimes lunch is served on a quiet beach somewhere, otherwise meals on are on board. Island Windjammers has started offering yacht charters in Europe; they did Croatia in 2023 and in 2024, it’s the Greek Isles aboard the 8-pax Lyra doing 10-night itineraries.

Enjoying great food (I promise, I’m almost there!) and savoring the breathtaking views of water, pine, and sails were the undisputed highlights of my journey. The highlight was definitely the first night, when we ferried to nearby Warren Island State Park for a traditional lobster bake. If you’ve been cruising before, you’re probably familiar with most of these policies. BUT there was one big difference when it came to sailing on a windjammer.

I read that hoisting the sails and sailing the historic schooner is part of the experience on Maine windjammer cruises. The first mate gave us a lesson on how to help raise the sails and split guests into two groups. One group helped raise the throat on one side, and one group helped raise the peak on the other. Our crew yelled out, “Heave,” and we called back, “Ho,” and as the sails were raised, the Riggin was underway. Other passengers volunteered to hoist the anchor (a demanding job). Some of the youngest passengers watered the anchor chain or raised the American flag.

Ingredients are farm-to-table, including Captain Jocelyn’s garden. Maine’s blueberries were a highlight on our trip, as well as bespoke oysters from Adam Campbell’s North Haven Oyster Company. Adam came aboard to teach us how to shuck and slurp the fresh, briny oysters he cultivates in the salt ponds in North Haven, Maine. The food was delicious, plentiful, and there were always extra snacks if needed.

Often, people who take the first half pre-season 3-day cruise have such a good time, they ask to stay on for the second half. IF SPACE ALLOWS, you can stay for the second half of the cruise, at an additional discounted fee. You can’t help but bond with one another through the experience. But I can also surmise that all cruises offered are likely vastly different. No two journeys are the same, and that’s part of what makes this so amazing.

After all, it’s a place with a long maritime history. Schooners from Maine carried cargo along the Eastern seaboard and as far away as Asia in the 1800s. Riggin, a historic schooner departing from Rockport, Maine, was an experience I couldn’t pass up. If you love historic ships and want to experience the romance of sailing along coastal Maine, here are some things to know before embarking on a Maine Windjammer Cruise. The best Maine windjammer cruises involve sailing on a traditional schooner out of Rockland, Maine. I had little idea what to expect; I only knew I was anxious to spend a few days “at sea” on a totally different kind of journey.

It was beautiful and sort of haunting, but I could see that every passenger relished the moment. On the last night, Annie, Jon, and their daughter Ella, who was a crew member, entertained us with music and singing. Maine is a great place to spot some of God’s most amazing creatures (moose, to name just one), and the coast is no different.
